Bike riding is a lot of fun, but accidents happen. A head injury can mean brain injury. That's why it's so important to wear your bike helmet.
Bike helmets are so important that the U.S. government has created safety standards for them. Your helmet should have a sticker that says it meets standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Wear a bike helmet every time you ride, even if you are going for a short ride.
Your bike helmet should fit you properly. Never wear a hat under your bike helmet. If you're unsure if your helmet fits you well, ask someone at a bike store.
If the straps are flying, it's likely to fall off your head when you need it most. Take care of your bike helmet and don't throw it around. Many bike helmets today are lightweight and come in cool colors.
Motorcycle Helmet Tips
Executive summary about A Helmet by MrFurious
There are essentially four types:
a.Full Face Helmet: This is the type of helmet that you see serious riders wear.
b.3/4 Helmet: Very similar to a Full face helmet, a 3/4 Helmet doesn't provide as much protection against the wind and such, and not as good in case of an accident.
c.Shorty: A shorty is essentially what you see motorcycle cops wear.
d.Skull cap: the Harley Davidson style helmet. Practically useless.
Most modern helmets are constructed out of space age materials like fiberglass, kevlar and carbon fiber. Check whether the helmet was approved by DOT (Department of Transport), SNELL (The Snell Memorial Foundation) or by the ANSI institute. If it has one or both seals of approval you're good to go. When trying on a helmet here are few things to remember:
1.Cheek pads should touch cheeks without pressing uncomfortably.
2.There should be no gap between forehead and helmet.
Consider getting a lighter helmet when you go for extended rides. Most motorcycle helmets are designed for one fall only. If you drop the helmet hard enough, it might be useless in an actual accident.
Executive summary about fox motocross boots by Brian Korfhage
Motocross Boots are an essential element in dirt bike riding. Top brands include Alpinestars, Fox Racing, Thor, Oneal, MSR and Answer Racing.
Fox has seemingly done the impossible and in our estimation created a nearly flawless motocross boot. About three years ago, Fox enlisted the help of AMA Motocross and Supercross champion James Stewart to help create the greatest motocross boot ever conceived. After 18 months of rigorous on-track testing, Fox has emerged with what is being touted as the greatest MX boot ever, the Forma Pro/Forma Pro Stewart.
With the help of Mr. Stewart they have produced a boot that comforts the foot, ankle, and calf area the very first time the boot is worn. The Forma Pro and Forma Pro Stewart only differ in the aesthetic design. The Stewart model is available in metallic/blue, metallic/silver, silver, and Stewart Titanium while the Forma Pro is available in black only.
An extra $15 buys you the Fox Forma Pro Stewart model and the knowledge that you're riding in the same boot as Mr. James Stewart. What we love about the Forma Pro: The boots conformed to a multitude of testers' feet and legs extremely well, thanks in large part to the anatomically contoured shin plate. Comfort doesn't mean a thing if the boot doesn't protect the foot and ankle.

SO YOU WANT TO RACE DOWNHILL
Executive summary about Racing Downhill by Spydersmom
So if you’re one of those women who have thought to yourself that downhill bike racing sounds fun, but you just don’t know where to start, here is your checklist! First of all, let’s get rid of some of the fallacies about downhill bike racing.
It’s dangerous, scary. Okay, so you’ve gotten past the initial roadblocks and are ready to try your first downhill race. First of all, for most beginner races, and especially the smaller local ones, your current cross country bike may be plenty suitable with just some minor adjustments as below, especially if it is a full suspension bike:
Lower your seat. Generally the steeper the terrain, the lower your seat needs to be. If you have trouble reaching your brake levers when you have your butt behind your saddle, you may want to bring your levers in or possibly even get a shorter stem for downhilling. Riser bars will help with keeping the front end of the bike up and centering your body weight. For proper downhill bike setup, you should feel almost like you are sliding back toward the back tire when sitting on the bike on level ground, especially if your race course is steep. If you’re using your cross country bike, use fatter tires; these provide more comfort and frequently greater traction for downhill conditions.
Now your bike is set up and ready. To ensure your safety and give you more confidence, you’ll need body armor. The standard downhill race armor setup consists of the following items:
1.Full face helmet.
2.Goggles.
3.Gloves.
4.Chest protector.
5.Elbow guards.
6.Shin and knee guards.
7.Pants or shorts and tops.
Now that you’re outfitted and your bike is ready to go, let’s head up to the start house! Obviously you can ride most downhill courses without having to attend a race, and the above preparations will serve you for that. In fact, many people enjoy riding downhill without ever racing at all. Most downhill course obstacles are designed to be easier taken with a little speed, and if you happen to have a longer travel bike, it will handle a lot more than you might think. Don’t forget to pedal as hard as you can on any flat sections rather than coasting – after all, it is a race! If you happen to crash, gather yourself and your bike, look behind you to make sure the coast is clear, and then jump back onto your bike and get going!
After 5 years of research and development Draggin Jeans has been recognised for producing the first motorcycle jean in the world to receive full CE Approval. Draggin Jeans is, and always will be, in the business of protecting motorcyclists.
The CE logo is a universally recognised symbol of product quality and durability. It denotes products that have undergone stringent testing and certification for sale in Europe and the rest of the world.
Abrasion Resistance test has featured heavily in Draggin Jeans advertising and for urban riding certification requires products to last more than 4 seconds at all of the key contact areas. Draggin Jeans tested at 4.4 seconds.
To test for burst strength, a small sample of the product is securely mounted to the top of a metal cylinder. Below the sample is a flexible membrane behind which water is pumped. The membrane distends, placing increasing pressure on the test specimen until, eventually, it fails.
To test for impact cut resistance a standardised blade is dropped from a specified height onto the test segment and the depth of penetration of the blade is measured.
All of the CE Tests are simple in design, yet very effective in outcome.
Trousers
Executive summary about draggin jeans by Simon Bradley
We've all, I'm sure, nodded sagely and tutted under our breaths at the sight of someone riding a bike without what we consider to be enough protective clothing. Now I'm absolutely not about to suggest that it's OK to ride wearing inadequate clothing. I've seen the greasy smear on the road that someone left when they fell off and I've collected enough gravel rash when I have been wearing the right gear to take that approach. But at the same time, there are huge disadvantages to conventional bike gear. Finally, as we swelter in an unusually warm summer, there's the simple factor of heat. Leathers, and bike clothing generally, is bloody hot, frankly.
What we need is a combination of the jeans and lightweight stuff we used to hoon around in but with the protection of proper bike clothing. Happily some folks in Australia had the same idea, because they combined a traditional pair of jeans with that staple of modern protective clothing, Kevlar. The result was Draggin' Jeans.
Take a pair of denim jeans and put a kevlar liner in to protect the bits that normally get worn through. Over the last six months I've been using a pair of Draggin' Dry's, one of their latest developments. Waterproof, crashproof jeans. How cool is that? It's a very strange feeling riding in the rain in jeans and not getting that horrible cold wet feeling. To be specific, I'm a fairly normal shape and they fit me better than any pair of jeans - regular or designer label - that I've ever had. Draggin jeans have made some pretty dramatic claims about the strength and durability of these trousers. Jeans a little too casual? Fair enough - Draggin' do a range of Chinos as well. Though you'll need some waterproofs just in case it rains. Draggin' even do, wait for it, shorts. But Kevlar lined shorts with zip on legs - ride to the beach, party, race, wherever, unzip the legs and enjoy having shorts on all day. The trouser range is completed with cargo pants and the obligatory camouflage trousers, all lined with Kevlar and as protective as you like.
Draggin' make jackets too, for the full denim effect. Jackets generally have a back protector pocket as well.
There's no problem with looking after the stuff - just chuck it in the washing machine and tumble dry like any other jeans. At around £100 for a pair of jeans they are on the steep side. But how much would a pair of Calvin Kleins and a decent pair of Goretex bike trousers cost you? The long and short of it? A brilliant product, worth every penny.Plus several washes as well...
Executive summary about dirt bike graphic kits by JC Hilderbrand
Every dirt bike winds up looking like crap. The three-step system is about as straightforward as it gets - a bottle of adhesive removal, cleaner and application fluid. Once the old graphics are peeled off, a spritz of the adhesive remover and let it sit for a minute and all the goo wipes away with a clean towel.Putting new graphics on top of adhesive remover wouldn't be the smartest thing to do so step two removes any leftover residue. No waiting here, just spray and wipe. Applying graphics is a real bitch with all the eyeballing, half-peeled backing, stick-on-pull-off BS. The application fluid allows you to coat the entire backside of the decal and then place it on the bike without fear of it getting hopelessly stuck.Once the decal is in place, the layer of fluid between the adhesive and the plastic lets the decal float and allows for fine-tuning the placement. One thing we found was that it only takes a little.Spraying too heavily will generate a long wait period before the adhesive grips well enough to hold on its own. That makes problems when installing larger, heavier decals like radiator shrouds, which tend to slide. The best way for us to make it work was to barely spray the decals and shake off any excess fluid before laying them on the bike.
The DeCal Works Graphic Application System is definitely worth a measly trio of Honest Abes. The application fluid is running out the fastest, but we'd estimate enough to easily assist six to eight full graphic kits. Ultimately, life as we know it won't cease to exist without the Graphic Application System.
